News Round-Up: August 14, 2017
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news and upcoming events on family tax credit issues.
- New research from economist Emmanuel Saez of the University of California, Berkeley and collaborators shows just how drastically the distribution of recent economic growth has skewed towards the top one percent of income earners. Saez’s findings add to a growing body of research indicating a dire need for stronger policies that benefit low and moderate-income workers, such as tax credits for working families. (Vox)
- Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) continued to advertise his Child Tax Credit proposal by holding roundtable meetings in his home state.(The Hill)
- Catherine Rampell, opinion columnist for The Washington Post, urged progressives to focus more attention on “post-tax” policies that redistribute wealth through the tax code to benefit low-wage workers, such as tax credits for working families. Noting that the Earned Income Tax Credit has made significant progress at the state level this year, Rampell questioned why the issue received less media attention and popular organizing than “pre-tax” policies such as raising the minimum wage.
