Weekly News Round-up: October 19, 2015

- Ohio Governor and presidential candidate John Kasich (R) unveiled his tax proposal, which would lower income taxes and increase the value of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by 10 percent (Associated Press, New York Times, Bloomberg).
- Presidential candidate and former senator Rick Santorum (R) introduced his plans for tax reform, which include creating a flat tax and eliminating most tax deductions and credits. He did not mention tax credits for working families (Rick Santorum, Accounting Today).
- The Washington Post Editorial Board wrote about the prevalence of improper payments of the EITC and encouraged lawmakers to craft legislation that would rein in fraud instead of eliminating the program (Washington Post).
- An article from the Cato Institute argued that the federal EITC should be cut (Cato Institute).
- The Des Moines Register Editorial Board urged Congress to renew provisions of the EITC and Child Tax Credit (CTC) scheduled to expire in 2017 to help low-income families in Iowa (Des Moines Register).
- Bill Jackson, president of United Way of Erie County, encouraged Pennsylvanians in Congress to support legislation to renew expiring provisions of the EITC and CTC (Go Erie).
