Weekly News Round-up: December 14, 2015

- Congress is expected to decide this week whether or not to renew expiring provisions of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) as part of a larger package of tax extenders. (The Hill, Washington Post).
- We cross-posted a blog by Elaine Maag of the Tax Policy Center on how Congress could significantly help low-income families with children by making current eligibility rules for the CTC permanent. (TaxVox, TCWF).
- The Brookings Institution released a new paper outlining which states will feel the greatest impact if Congress does not renew key provisions of the federal EITC and comparing current proposals to further expand the credit (Brookings Institution, TCWF).
- Noah Williams, a professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wrote that the tax plan proposed by presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) would create economic security for all families. Rubio’s proposal includes a provision to expand the CTC (Forbes).
- The Washington Post editorial board urged Congress to strengthen the EITC by eliminating the credit’s marriage penalty (Washington Post).
