News Round Up: August 10, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately affecting low-income communities and exacerbating economic inequality across the country. Throughout this crisis, TCWF will compile news, legislation, and research on how tax credits and other income-boosting policies can provide much-needed relief for the hardest-hit communities:
Top Story: Samantha Waxman, policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), encouraged other states to follow California and Colorado’s lead and expand their state Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs) to immigrant workers who file using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). - New data from the CBPP showed how many households living in rural areas in each state would benefit from temporary expansions to the federal EITC and Child Tax Credit (CTC). (CBPP)
- New data from the Census Bureau found that almost 19 million children across the country are in households experiencing severe economic hardship due to COVID-19. (CBPP)
- Kate Breslin, president and CEO of the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy; and Jennifer March, executive director of the Citizens’ Committee for Children of NY, urged New York state policymakers to implement five key policies to combat child poverty, including expanding the state EITC and CTC.
