News Round Up: September 3, 2019
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news and upcoming events on family tax credit issues:
Top Story: The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) released new data on how the Working Families Tax Relief Act, a proposal to significantly strengthen the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC), would benefit workers in low-wage jobs. (CBPP)
- Rahm Emanuel, former mayor of Chicago, urged lawmakers to work together to reduce poverty by increasing the federal minimum wage and by modernizing the federal EITC through simplifying the application, offering payments throughout the year and increasing the benefits to workers without dependent children. - As part of her presidential campaign, U.S. Senator Kamala Harris, (D-CA) released a proposal to increase employment opportunities to Americans with disabilities through increased access to education and social programs. The plan includes proposals to bolster broad-based policies that would also help people with disabilities, including making the Child Tax Credit fully refundable. (CNN)
- Marie-Frances Rivera, president of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center; and Stephanie Ettinger de Cuba, executive director of Children’s HealthWatch, urged Congress to enact the Working Families Tax Relief Act, which would help almost 788,000 Massachusetts families. (MassLive)
- Oklahoma Minority Leader Rep. Emily Virgin (D-Norman) urged her fellow state lawmakers to restore refundability to the state’s EITC, which would put money in the pockets of over 200,000 working Oklahomans. (The Norman Transcript)
