Ohio Expands EITC
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) has signed legislation to increase the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 10 to 30 percent of the federal credit and remove the income cap as part of the state’s 2019 transportation budget.
The expansion was spearheaded by the state Senate and will save low-income taxpayers $38 million a year, according to Senate President Larry Obhof (R-Medina). But Policy Matters Ohio argued that while the expansion is an improvement to the state’s EITC, lawmakers should have also considered making the credit refundable to benefit taxpayers with the lowest income.
