News Round-Up: February 19, 2019
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news and upcoming events on family tax credit issues:
Top Story: U.S.Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) are reintroducing legislation to double the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for working families and increase the credit nearly six-fold for childless workers. - The Arkansas House Democratic Caucus released their tax relief proposals, which include enacting a state EITC worth 10 percent of the federal credit. State Representative Frederick Love (D-Little Rock) also introduced legislation to enact a state EITC worth 5 percent of the federal credit. (Arkansas Times; Arkansas State Legislature)
- Illinois State Representative Maurice West (D-Rockford) introduced a bill to increase the state EITC from 18 to 36 percent of the federal credit beginning in 2020. (Illinois General Assembly)
- Indiana State Representative Carey Hamilton (D-Indianapolis) has proposed legislation to enact a state-level Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC) worth a percentage of the federal credit correlated with the family’s income. (RTV6 Indianapolis)
- New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R-Canandaigua) introduced legislation to increase the state EITC from 30 to 45 percent of the federal credit; increase the state’s CDCTC to an undetermined amount; and allow qualifying individuals to claim the EITC in monthly installments.
