News Round Up: July 30, 2018
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news on family tax credit issues:
Top Story: Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker (R) signed a state budget for Fiscal Year 2019 that includes an expansion of the state-level Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 23 percent to 30 percent of the federal credit. (TCWF)
- Research recently published in the University of Chicago’s Journal of Labor Economics finds a link between EITC expansions and an increased likelihood of children completing high school and college, as well as an improvement in employment outcomes.
- The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) examined how state-level EITCs reduce poverty and increase opportunity for women and people of color; two groups that are overrepresented in low-wage work. (CBPP)
- Carrie Butler, policy director for Action Utah, encouraged the Utah legislature to enact a state-level EITC to reduce intergenerational poverty and encourage work. (The Salt Lake Tribune)
