News Round-up: July 17, 2017
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news and upcoming events on family tax credit issues.
- House Democrats in the Kentucky legislature have pre-filed a tax reform bill, BR 15, which would establish a state-level Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). (Insider Louisville; The Richmond Register)
- Hawai’i Governor David Ige (D) signed legislation establishing a nonrefundable state-level EITC worth 20 percent of the federal credit. (TCWF)
- The Massachusetts legislature passed a budget for fiscal year 2018 that includes an unprecedented provision to expand EITC access to domestic violence survivors and abandoned spouses. (TCWF)
- In a radio commentary, Chris Fitzsimon, director of NC Policy Watch, highlighted the progress many states have made to expand their EITCs or enact new ones this legislative session. Fitzsimon pointed out that North Carolina had an EITC until lawmakers abolished it in 2014 and argued that it’s time to bring the credit back to help struggling workers in the state. (NC Policy Watch)
