News Round-up: September 26, 2016
Here are some highlights from the past week’s news and upcoming events on family tax credit issues.
- Jason Furman, the chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, wrote about how the Obama administration’s support for antipoverty policies has reduced income inequality. Furman noted that by working to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC), the administration narrowed the income gap between the highest and lowest earners (Washington Post, Five Thirty Eight).
- The Georgia Budget and Policy Institute noted in a blog post that a state EITC could help more working families make ends meet and reduce hunger across the state (GBPI).
- Advocates in Utah called for the creation of a state EITC to help offset the state’s rising income inequality (Deseret News).
- Tax experts evaluated Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s tax reform plan and found that the changes would most benefit upper income families (Wall Street Journal, Marketwatch).
- Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack wrote on the White House blog about the importance of the EITC to rural families, whose incomes tend to be lower than individuals living in urban centers (The White House).
